“How long will it take?” is usually the second question a business owner asks, right after the price. The honest answer is that the building is rarely the slow part. Waiting for content, photos and feedback is. Here is how long each kind of website really takes, what happens on each day, and how to get yours live faster.

The short answer

A small business website of 3 to 5 pages usually takes 3 days to 2 weeks with a freelance developer, if your content is ready. A 10-page site takes about 2 to 4 weeks. An online store or a web app with logins takes several weeks, depending on the features and on how fast your payment gateway approves your account. With me, a 3-page website goes live in 3 to 5 business days.

“Typical time” assumes a freelancer or small team and content that is ready to go. Agencies with longer approval chains often take longer for the same site. For prices, see my packages or what a website costs in India.

What happens day by day

Here is how a 3-page business website runs when everything is ready on day one:

  1. Day 1: brief and structure. We agree on the pages, the services to list, and the searches you want to be found for, such as your service plus your area.
  2. Day 2: design and content. Layout, colours from your logo, and the text for each page, written so it answers what customers ask.
  3. Days 3 to 4: build. The pages are built, fast on mobile, with the WhatsApp button, the enquiry form and the SEO setup. You follow along on a live preview link.
  4. Day 5: your review and launch. You check it on your phone, ask for changes, and it goes live on your domain with Google Search Console set up.

Bigger sites follow the same steps, with more time on content and building. Online stores add product upload, payment gateway setup and shipping, and web apps add a planning stage for logins, data and admin screens.

What really slows a website down

  • Waiting for content. Service descriptions, prices, photos and the logo. This is the number one cause of delays.
  • Slow or scattered feedback. Changes sent one at a time over a week instead of in one list.
  • Domain access. The domain was bought years ago by a relative or an old agency, and nobody has the login.
  • Payment gateway approval. For stores, Razorpay or PayU review your business documents and website before you can take live payments. Start this early.
  • Adding features halfway.“Can we also add bookings?” is a reasonable request, but it is a new piece of work with its own time.

How to get your website live faster

Send these on day one and most of the waiting disappears:

  • Your logo, and 5 to 10 real photos of your work, shop or team
  • Your list of services, with starting prices if you show them
  • Your address, phone number, WhatsApp number and working hours
  • Two or three websites you like, and what you like about them
  • Login details for your domain, or permission to buy one in your name
  • One person on your side who gives the final yes on changes

After launch: when will it show on Google?

Going live and showing up on Google are two different things. Once the site is live and submitted in Google Search Console, Google usually finds and indexes the main pages within a few days to a couple of weeks. Ranking for competitive searches takes longer, often a few months, and depends on your content, reviews and other sites linking to you. If yours is taking too long, see why a website doesn't show on Google.
