Hiring a developer
Freelancer or agency: who should build your website?
A freelancer is usually cheaper and faster; an agency brings a team. Here is when each makes sense, and how to remove most of the risk of hiring a freelancer.

If you need a website or an app built in India, you can hire a freelancer, a small studio, or an agency. Each will tell you they are the safer choice. I'm a freelancer, so read this with that in mind, but I'll also tell you when an agency is the better pick, because sending a client to the wrong option helps nobody.
The short answer
Side by side
| Freelancer | Agency | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Lower: no office, sales team or account managers to pay for | Higher: the price covers a team and overheads |
| Who you talk to | The person building it | An account or project manager |
| Speed of decisions | Fast: one person decides | Slower: changes go through a process |
| Range of skills | Depends on the person | Designers, developers, testers, marketers |
| Capacity | One project at a time, roughly | Several people in parallel |
| Continuity risk | Higher if the person disappears | Lower: someone else can take over |
| Best for | Websites, stores, admin panels, focused apps | Large builds, many integrations, ongoing marketing |
When a freelancer is the better choice
- The project is clear. A business website, a store with payments and shipping, or a panel to replace your spreadsheets. One skilled person can build it well.
- The budget matters. The same work usually costs noticeably less without agency overheads.
- You want to talk to the builder.Explaining your business directly to the developer avoids the “telephone game” between you, a manager and a developer you never meet.
- You want to start soon. A freelancer can often begin within days.
When an agency is the better choice
- It is a big build with a deadline. If five people need to work at once, one freelancer can't do it.
- You need formal guarantees. Large companies often need contracts with response times, uptime commitments and a team on call.
- You want marketing too. Ads, social media and content alongside the website, from one supplier.
How to reduce the risk with a freelancer
The real risk with a freelancer is not quality, it is continuity: what happens if they get busy or disappear? These steps remove most of it:
- Look at live work. Open their projects on your phone. Are they fast? Do the forms work? Are the businesses real?
- Talk to a past client, or read what clients have said about them.
- Get a written scope, price and timeline before paying anything.
- Pay in milestones, tied to things you can see, such as a preview link.
- Own everything. The domain, hosting and code should be in your name from the start, so another developer could take over if needed.
Questions to ask anyone before hiring them
- Can I see two or three live projects similar to mine?
- Who will build it, and who do I contact during the project?
- What exactly is included in the price, and what costs extra?
- How do I review progress before launch?
- Who owns the domain, hosting and code at the end?
- What happens after launch if something breaks, or I want a change?
How I work
I'm a software engineer in Vashi, Navi Mumbai. I meet clients in person in Navi Mumbai and Mumbai, and over Google Meet anywhere else. Every project starts with a written scope, timeline and price, you review it on a live preview link as it is built, and the domain, hosting and code are yours at the end. You can see my live client work, read what I build for businesses, or book a call.

Check live projects, talk to a past client, get a written scope and price, pay in milestones, and keep the domain, hosting and code in your own name from the start.
What should I ask a web developer before hiring?
Ask to see similar live projects, who will build it, what is included in the price, how you review progress, who owns the code and accounts, and what happens after launch.
