Many business owners in India are surprised by a “maintenance” bill a year after their website goes live. Sometimes it is fair. Sometimes it pays for a few renewals and almost no work. This guide breaks down what maintenance actually covers, what it costs for different kinds of websites, and how to avoid paying for things you don't need.

The short answer

For a simple business website in India, the unavoidable yearly costs are the domain and hosting, usually a few thousand rupees in total. Paid maintenance on top of that ranges from occasional fixes charged per request to a monthly plan of a few thousand rupees. WordPress sites and online stores need more upkeep than a simple, hand-coded website.

What website maintenance actually means

“Maintenance” is used for very different things. Separate them before comparing prices:

  • Renewals. Domain and hosting. These are bills, not work, and you should pay them on your own accounts.
  • Updates and security. WordPress core, themes and plugins need regular updates, or the site becomes easy to hack. A hand-coded site has far fewer moving parts.
  • Backups. A copy of the site and its data you can restore if something breaks.
  • Monitoring. Knowing when the site is down, slow, or a form stops sending enquiries.
  • Content changes. New prices, photos, services or offers.
  • Improvements. New pages, features or SEO work. This is development, not maintenance, and is usually priced separately.

Typical yearly costs

Typical yearly website maintenance costs in India by type of website
Type of websiteUnavoidable costsMaintenance it really needs
Simple hand-coded business websiteDomain + low-cost hostingOccasional content changes; very few updates
WordPress business websiteDomain + hosting + any paid plugin licencesRegular updates, backups and security checks
Online storeDomain + hosting + payment and shipping feesMonitoring orders and payments, updates, small fixes
Web app with loginsDomain + hosting + databaseMonitoring, backups, security updates, bug fixes

Plans you will commonly see are either per request (you pay for each change) or a monthly retainer that includes a set amount of work. A retainer makes sense when you change things every month or run an online store; for a business website that changes a few times a year, paying per request is usually cheaper.

Red flags in a maintenance quote

  1. The developer owns your domain or hosting. Then the “maintenance fee” is really rent. Move both to accounts in your name.
  2. No list of what is included. Ask how many changes, how fast they respond, and whether backups and updates are actually done.
  3. Paying for an SSL certificate. The padlock is free with almost every host today.
  4. A big yearly fee for a site nobody touches. If nothing has changed in a year, ask what the fee paid for.
  5. No way to leave. You should be able to take your code, content and data to another developer.

How to keep maintenance costs low

  • Build with fewer moving parts. A fast, hand-coded site has no plugins to update, which is most of the work on WordPress sites. I explain the trade-off in Next.js vs WordPress.
  • Get an admin panel for what changes often. If you update prices, products or job listings every week, a simple panel lets your team do it without paying a developer each time.
  • Keep accounts in your name. Domain, hosting, Google Search Console and analytics.
  • Turn on automatic renewals. An expired domain can take the site and your email down with it.

How I handle it

Every site I build is handed over with the domain, hosting and code in the client's name, so there is no fee just to keep it online. After launch, clients can come back for changes when they need them, or agree a monthly plan if they run a store or app that needs regular attention. Questions people also ask

How much does website maintenance cost per year in India?

For a simple business website, the unavoidable costs are the domain and hosting, usually a few thousand rupees a year. Paid maintenance ranges from per-request fixes to monthly plans; WordPress sites and online stores need more upkeep.

What is included in website maintenance?

Typically domain and hosting renewals, software and security updates, backups, monitoring and small content changes. New pages or features are development work and are usually priced separately.

Often because the developer owns the domain or hosting, or the fee includes work that is not being done. Ask for a list of what is included and move accounts into your own name.

An SSL certificate (the padlock) is free with almost every hosting provider today, so you should not pay extra for it.
