AI and websites
AI can build a website for free. So why pay a developer?
AI gives you a page that looks finished. Getting found on Google and in ChatGPT, loading fast on phones and turning visitors into enquiries is the part you pay for.

Type “make me a website for my bakery in Vashi” into ChatGPT or an AI website builder and, a minute later, you have something that looks like a real website. Headline, photos, a services section, a contact form. Free. So it's a fair question, and one business owners ask me: if AI can do that, why would anyone pay a developer?
I'm a developer, and I use AI every day, so here is the honest answer, including when you should not pay me or anyone else.
The short answer
What AI genuinely does well
Let's be fair to AI first. It is very good at:
- A first draft in minutes. Layout, colours, sections and placeholder text, so you can see an idea instead of imagining it.
- Writing code fast.ChatGPT, Claude and tools like v0 or Lovable write working HTML, React and CSS. I use them myself for routine parts, which is one reason my prices are lower than an agency's.
- Simple, one-page sites.An event page, a portfolio, a “coming soon” page.
So the question is not “AI or developer”. It is: who makes the decisions, and who does the work that AI doesn't know it needs to do?
Looking finished vs actually working
A website has two layers. The front layer is what you see: design, text, images. The back layer is what Google, ChatGPT and your customers' phones see: how fast it loads, how it is structured, what it tells search engines, and what happens when someone taps “Call”.
AI is excellent at the front layer. The back layer is where most free and cheap websites fail, quietly. Nobody complains about a website that doesn't rank. It just never brings anyone. Here are the six things in that back layer.
1. Speed: a 90+ PageSpeed score on phones
Most of your customers open your site on a phone, often on mobile data. Google measures this with Core Web Vitals: the main content should appear within 2.5 seconds (LCP), taps should respond within 200 milliseconds (INP), and the page should not jump around while loading (CLS under 0.1).
AI builders and templates tend to load heavy scripts, large uncompressed images and several fonts, so a mobile PageSpeed score below 70 is common. Check yours: it takes two minutes. A carefully built site can score 90 to 100. My own homepage, with animations, scores 99 on mobile and 100 on desktopin Google's PageSpeed Insights.
That matters twice: Google uses page experience as a ranking signal, and slow pages lose visitors before they ever see your phone number. More on this in why your website is slow and how to fix it.
2. SEO: being found on Google
A website nobody finds is a brochure in a drawer. Search engine optimisation is a list of unglamorous work that AI won't do unless you know to ask, and check:
- Keyword research.Your customers don't search “premium artisanal baked goods”. They search “cake shop in Vashi” or “birthday cake delivery Navi Mumbai”. The site has to use those words in its titles, headings and pages.
- A page per service and per area. One page that lists everything can't rank for twenty different searches. Separate pages can.
- Titles and descriptions written to be clicked, within the length Google shows.
- Technical setup:one version of each address (www or not, with redirects), canonical tags, a sitemap, robots.txt, and no accidental “noindex”.
- Google Search Consoleset up, the sitemap submitted and pages requested for indexing, then checked for errors. AI can't log into your Google account and do this.
- Google Business Profile linked to the site, with the same name, address and phone.
3. AEO and GEO: being the answer, not just a result
Search has changed. Many questions are now answered at the top of Google by an AI Overview, and more people ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity directly: “Who is a good website designer in Navi Mumbai?” Two newer disciplines deal with this:
- AEO, answer engine optimisation: writing pages so a search engine can lift a complete answer from them. A question as the heading, a two or three sentence answer directly below, then the detail. Notice the green box at the top of this article: that is AEO.
- GEO, generative engine optimisation: making your business easy for AI tools to describe and recommend correctly. Plain facts about what you do, where, for whom and at what price; consistent details across the web; reviews on trusted sites; and letting AI search crawlers read your site.
Behind both sit schemas, or structured data: code that labels your page for machines. On a typical business site I add LocalBusiness or Person details, Service, BreadcrumbList, Article for blog posts and FAQPage for genuine question-and-answer sections. You never see it on the page, and an AI builder rarely adds more than the basics.
If the acronyms are new, read SEO vs AEO vs GEO explained simply, and how to get your business recommended by ChatGPT.
4. Pages that answer the questions customers ask
Before someone calls you, they have questions. How much does it cost? Do you cover my area? How long does it take? Can I trust you? A website that answers those questions gets the call. One that doesn't sends them back to Google, to your competitor.
That is why a website built to bring business usually includes:
- FAQ sections on each service page, written from questions real customers ask, not generic filler.
- A blog that answers common questions in your field (like this one), each article linking to the service it relates to. These articles are what Google and AI tools quote, and they bring people who are still deciding.
- Prices, or at least starting prices.“From ₹4,999” answers the first question everyone has.
- Proof: real reviews, photos of real work, and live projects people can open.
AI can write paragraphs. It cannot know what your customers actually ask you on the phone, what makes you different from the shop down the road, or which claims are true. Generic AI text also reads the same as everyone else's, and both Google and readers notice.
5. Turning visits into enquiries
Visitors are not the goal. Calls, WhatsApp messages and form submissions are. That needs:
- A call and WhatsApp button that is always reachable with a thumb on a phone.
- A contact form that actually delivers to your inbox (and doesn't land in spam), with protection from spam bots.
- Analytics events on every call, WhatsApp and form click, so you know which pages and searches bring enquiries, not just visits.
Test the form yourself after launch and every month after: a form that fails silently looks exactly like a form nobody uses, so nobody notices. See why a website gets no enquiries for the full list.
6. Owning it
Free AI builders are free to start. Most free plans run on the builder's subdomain with its branding, and a custom domain, removing ads or selling online needs a monthly or yearly plan. Many also make it hard to move your site elsewhere later.
When I build a site, the domain, hosting and code are in your name. You pay the providers directly, usually a couple of thousand rupees a year for a small site, and any developer can take over later.
Free AI website vs a developer-built website
| Free AI website | Developer-built (with AI help) | |
|---|---|---|
| Time to first version | Minutes | 3 to 5 business days for a starter site |
| Upfront cost | Free (paid plan for your own domain) | From ₹4,999 with me |
| Mobile speed | Varies; heavy templates often score below 70 | 90+ is the target; 99 on this site |
| Keyword research | No | Yes, for your services and areas |
| Page per service and area | Rarely | Yes |
| Structured data (schema) | Basic, if any | LocalBusiness, Service, FAQ, Breadcrumb, Article |
| AEO and GEO | No | Direct answers, FAQs, consistent facts, AI crawlers allowed |
| Search Console and indexing | You do it yourself | Set up, submitted and checked |
| Enquiry tracking | Usually none | Calls, WhatsApp and forms tracked |
| Who owns it | Often tied to the platform | You: domain, hosting and code |
When a free AI website is enough
Save your money if:
- You just need something to show when people ask “do you have a website?”.
- Your work comes from referrals and you are already fully booked.
- You are testing an idea and might change direction next month.
In those cases, use a free builder and spend the effort on a complete Google Business Profile. Come back when you want the website to bring new customers.
Pay for a developer when:
- You want enquiries from people who search Google or ask ChatGPT for your service.
- You compete with other businesses in the same area for the same searches.
- You need it to do something: bookings, payments, an online store or an admin panel.
Questions people also ask
Can AI build a website for free?
Yes. AI website builders and chatbots like ChatGPT can create a good-looking website in minutes, often on a free plan. Free plans usually run on the builder’s own subdomain with its branding; a custom domain and removing ads need a paid plan. What AI does not do by itself is make the site fast, findable on Google and AI search, and set up to bring enquiries.
Can ChatGPT build a website for my business?
ChatGPT can write the code and the text for a simple website. You still have to host it, connect a domain, make it fast on phones, set up SEO and structured data, submit it to Google Search Console and check that the contact form actually delivers. It also tends to write generic copy that does not match what your customers search for.
Are AI-generated websites good for SEO?
They are a starting point, not a finished SEO setup. AI builders handle basics like a sitemap, but they rarely research the searches your customers use, build a page per service and area, add the right schema, or fix speed on mobile. Those decide whether the site ranks.
Will AI replace web developers?
AI already writes much of the routine code, and good developers use it every day. What it does not replace is deciding what the site should say and to whom, connecting it to your business, and making it rank and convert. That judgement is what you pay a developer for.
Is it worth paying a developer if I can make a website with AI?
If the website only needs to exist, like an online visiting card, a free AI site is fine. If you want it to bring customers from Google, ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews, a developer who sets up speed, SEO, AEO, GEO and tracking is usually worth it. My business websites start at ₹4,999.
What is the difference between SEO, AEO and GEO?
SEO gets your pages ranked in Google’s normal results. AEO (answer engine optimisation) structures your content so Google and voice assistants can lift a direct answer from it. GEO (generative engine optimisation) makes your business easy for AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity to cite and recommend.
