Getting found online
Does a small business need a website if it has Instagram?
Instagram shows your work. Google Business Profile puts you on the map. A website gets you found for what people search. Here is when you need one.

Plenty of Indian businesses run on an Instagram page, a WhatsApp number and a Google Business Profile, and they do well. So it's a fair question: does a small business still need a website? Sometimes the honest answer is “not yet”. Often it is “yes, a small one”. Here is how to tell which applies to you.
The short answer
What each one does well
| Good at | Weak at | |
|---|---|---|
| Showing your work, reaching followers, building trust with regular posts | Being found by people searching for a service; you don’t control who sees your posts | |
| Google Business Profile | Appearing on Google Maps and local search, reviews, calls and directions | Explaining services in detail; limited space and design |
| Website | Being found for specific searches, explaining services and prices, taking enquiries, orders and payments | Needs some upfront work, and doesn’t bring visitors by itself without SEO |
They are not competitors. The strongest setup is all three, pointing at each other: Instagram and your Google profile link to the website, and the website links back to them.
What a website does that social media can't
- It shows up when people search for what you do.Someone searching “wedding photographer in Navi Mumbai” or “office shifting in Pune” is looking for a service, not for your Instagram handle. A page about exactly that service can appear in those results.
- You own it. Your Instagram reach depends on an algorithm, and accounts can be restricted or hacked. Your website and domain stay yours.
- It answers questions before people call. Services, prices, areas covered, process, FAQs. Fewer time-wasting calls, more serious enquiries.
- It makes you look established. Larger clients and companies often check for a proper website before contacting a supplier.
- It can do work for you. Enquiry forms, bookings, online payments, order tracking or a customer portal.
When you can wait
- Your customers come from referrals, and you are fully booked.
- You sell mostly to people who already follow you, through DMs and WhatsApp.
- You are still testing whether the business works at all.
In those cases, put your effort into a complete Google Business Profile first: correct category, photos, service area, opening hours and reviews. It is free and brings local calls.
What a small business website needs
You don't need twenty pages. A first website can be three to five pages:
- Home: what you do, where, and for whom, in the first screen, with a call or WhatsApp button.
- Services: each main service explained, ideally with starting prices.
- About: who you are, how long you have been doing this, and photos of real work.
- Contact: phone, WhatsApp, an enquiry form, address or service area, and a map.
- Reviews or past work: embed or quote real customer feedback.
Make sure it is fast on phones, has clear titles for Google, and is connected to Google Search Console so it actually gets indexed. If an existing site isn't appearing on Google, see why a website doesn't show on Google.
What it costs
A small business website like this costs from about ₹5,000 with a freelance developer, plus a domain and hosting each year. If you are in Navi Mumbai, I can meet you: I'm a website designer in Vashi and work across Navi Mumbai. My business websites start at ₹4,999 and go live in 3 to 5 business days, with SEO set up from the start.
